Sep. 1--Federal regulators approved a third flu vaccine yesterday for distribution to Americans, hoping to avoid a last-minute shortage like last winter.

The Food and Drug Administration also said a California drugmaker has made progress in fixing manufacturing problems from last year, possibly reopening another source of vaccines.

The FDA's fast-track approval of Fluarix, made by GlaxoSmithKline P.L.C. in Germany and already sold overseas, will add at least 8 million doses to the country's stockpile.

The FDA approval for London-based GlaxoSmithKline, whose U.S. operations are located in Philadelphia, would bring the total doses to 61 million-71 million, officials have said....
