Nov. 17--San Antonio-based telecom giant SBC Communications Inc. on Tuesday said it will launch Internet phone service for consumers early next year, joining rivals such as AT&T and Verizon in the evolving frontier of voice-over-Internet protocol (VoIP).
Internet-based phone service, though still a small market, has grown in recent months as consumers have used it to lower their long-distance bills. And businesses have adopted VoIP to improve their phone networks' efficiency.
