BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. _ Maybe it was the surroundings, sitting there in an imposing, oversize booth in Sly and Arnold's place _ Planet Hollywood in Beverly Hills _ but whatever it was, Jean-Claude Van Damme looked small. And bookish. And pretty ordinary.
So ordinary that when a couple of normally savvy L.A. radio reporters walked by, they ignored the star in their midst and started joking with Van Damme's breakfast guest. When they realized their embarrassing mistake, they backed away from the table, bowing and apologizing as they went.
Their mistake was understandable. Wearing glasses and affecting his speak-softly-and-carry-no-stick manner, Van Damme resembles Clark Kent more than he does Superman.
It's easy to assume an action hero should be larger than life when you meet him in person, but Van Damme isn't that way. He's never been that way. And that has been one of his problems.
