When the first edition of The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz came out in 1988, RBB noted, "the mere publication of an academic treatment of this genre makes a statement as to the integration of jazz into the mainstream of the music community." Our starred review on p. 1277 states that, with the greatly revised and expanded second edition, Grove Jazz (as the publisher calls it) "supersedes itself as a landmark."
