I am writing in response to the article "Caretakers of Homebirth" (May-June 2002) about Homefirst. This doctor and midwife natural-childbirth practice has pioneered home labor for VBACs since 1986. European research shows that VBACs are not intrinsically more dangerous than normal, primary vaginal delivery, especially when conducted at home. Some have described Homefirst as the leading VBAC practice in the US, and we have had people come here from far away to try for vaginal delivery, which, I can certify, empowers a woman to be fully a mother.
When we offered hospital VBACs (prior to 1986), the success rate was no more than 55 percent. Simply treating primary VBAC patients as "normal" and attending them...
