Cabinets that are functional, durable, and attractive aren't cheap. Indeed, cabinets are often the most expensive part of a remodeled kitchen.
Our tests have shown that most models, even the least expensive ones at the home center, should hold up well under normal use. The degree of customization you want largely determines the cost.
Your basic choices are these:
Stock cabinets. Typically the least expensive option, these come off-the-shelf from kitchen-remodeling stores and home centers. (Lowes.com and Homedepot.com are two web sites where you can get help configuring the right layout for your kitchen.) Stock cabinets come in standard styles and dimensions between 9 inches and 48 inches, in 3-inch increments.
Semicustom cabinets. Sold at home centers, cabinet dealerships, and in kitchen showrooms, these come in more sizes, materials, finishes, exterior-trim choices, and with more storage accessories than stock cabinets. Typically, you choose from a list of options and the cabinets are made to order.
Custom-made cabinets. The most costly option; you dictate style, materials, sizes, and features to a cabinetmaker or kitchen and bath shop.
