One of the best parts of my job is reading books; just the pure range of concepts out there is stimulating. Parenting, in particular, is a topic of never-ending interest; there's always something new to discover. Innovative writers like educator Joseph Chilton Pearce, psychologist Sharon Lamb, and activist Joe Kelly continuously provide fresh perspectives on how children learn, who they are, and what they need. Their ideas are challenging and energizing, as are those of other authors discussed in this section. Check them out and watch yourself--and your children--grow.

The excellent Homeschooling Step-by-Step: 100+ Simple Solutions to Homeschooling's Toughest Problems, by Laura Maery Gold and Joan M. Zielinski, covers myriad approaches to teaching and learning, as well as legal issues. (Prima Publishing, 2002) Also, take a look at Lisa Rivero's well-researched Creative Home Schooling for Gifted Children: A Resource Guide (Great Potential Press, 2002) and the thorough A Parent's Guide to Homeschooling: Experts' Answers to Tough Questions About Homeschooling, by Tamra B. Orr. (Parent's Guide Press, 2002)

Homeschooling for Success: How Parents Can Create a Superior Education for Their Child, by the founders of Home school.com, Rebecca Kochenderfer and Elizabeth Kanna, is an enthusiastic, informative beginner's handbook. It includes an excellent chapter on Internet learning, as well as a support-group list and a state-by-state summary of laws. (Warner Books, 2002)

In Little Moments of Peace: Daily Reflections for Mothers, Andrea Alban Gosline brings the same tenderness to the topic of motherhood as she did in her previous work, Mother's Nature--a personal favorite. These contemplative readings, often anecdotes from the author's daily life, will renew, strengthen, and embolden. (Jeremy P. Tarcher/Putnam, 2002)

Parenting Begins Before Conception: A Guide to Preparing Body, Mind, and Spirit for You and Your Future Child, by Carista Luminare-Rosen, PhD, unites Eastern and Western...
