As much as I enjoy Mothering, I was rather annoyed with the article "Beyond Politics" in the July-August 2001 issue. Surely Nitzan Gordon's dance/movement therapy program has fostered some wonderful relationships, and I wholeheartedly support bringing people together as she has. How, ever, to talk about peaceful coexistence without having a discussion of the politics that have bred the prejudices and fears among Israelis and Palestinians/Israeli Arabs is both dishonest and counterproductive.
To say, for example, that there is an "inequality in the allocation of resources to Arabs" is a gross understatement, The US gives $5 billion in aid to Israelis every year, the largest recipients of US foreign aid. The overwhelming majority of deaths in the region have been Palestinians, and Palestinian refugees make up the largest refugee population in the world with 3.2 million registered with the United Nations. These are just some of the facts that are important in understanding why Israelis and Arabs do not peacefully coexist.
