As a longtime resident of Sweden and mother of two I was happy to see the article about family policy in Sweden by Brittany Shahmehri ("More Than Welcome," November-December 2001). I think it is only fair, though, to point out some of the less positive aspects of Sweden's policies.

There are many theories as to why there is a decline, including the fact that young women are often discriminated against by potential employers who do not want to hire them if they are planning on having children.
