The annual Defeat Autism Now (DAN) conference was recently held in Boston. Started in 1995 by Bernard Rimland of the Autism Research Institute, the conference has become a participatory think-tank on autism. What it has yielded is the DAN Protocol: a guideline for assessing and treating the underlying biological causes or conditions of autism as they present uniquely in each child, rather than treating the symptoms pharmacologically with a one-size-fits-all mentality. These treatments have led to some remarkable recoveries and improvements in the lives of many autistic children. The conference has also provided a safe haven for independent medical researchers to present the most cutting-edge and controversial research and theory on the etiological factors contributing to autism.
