Evidence continues to mount that formula, soy in particular, can be unhealthy for infants. The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) recently published a formula industry sponsored study by Strom et al. that claims soy formula is "safe" for infants. In a follow-up letter to the editor, pediatrician Lynn Goldman of Johns Hopkins University redirected the authors to existing research. She wrote, "A retrospective epidemiological study by Fort et al. found that children with autoimmune disease were significantly more likely to have received soy formula as infants than were healthy siblings or control subjects. A recent study from the National Toxicology Program found that rats receiving dietary genistein (an isoflavin found in soy beans) had increased T-cell immune responses. These findings suggest that soy consumption could adversely affect the course of autoimmune disease in children...
