Thank you for the article on medications and breastfeeding, "But Is It Safe for My Baby?" by Thomas W. Hale (March-April 2002). In February I had an abscessed tooth and was on three rounds of antibiotics. I am nursing my 5-month-old daughter, so I was concerned about the effect these medications would have on her. This article put my fears to rest, and I will keep it handy for future reference.
DEANNA ERCOLANI Wichita, Kansas
As a breastfeeding mom, I was happy there was an article in Mothering about medications and breastfeeding. As a WIC nurse, I was glad to see the article was written by Dr. Hale. I use his information frequently at work. Our local breastfeeding coalition gave gift baskets with copies of Hale's Medications and Mothers' Milk to pharmacies, OB/GYNs, pediatricians, and the ER and OR at our local hospitals. I hope that they will use the books! Few things are more frustrating for our staff (and me, as a mom) than to hear, "Well I had to stop; my doctor put me on this medication." Few things are more frustrating for mothers than to learn that they, in fact, did not have to wean. I hope Mothering's mothers will save this article and keep it handy--there is so...
