Oct. 31--RATE HIKE SEEN AS SURE THING: The financial markets rarely provide a 100 percent certainty of anything, but that's just how sure the futures markets are of a 12th consecutive quarter-point interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve on Tuesday.
Indeed, futures traders are also putting a 100 percent probability of a quarter-point hike at the Fed's meeting in December, with little being left to the imagination as Alan Greenspan winds down his chairmanship.
With such certitude regarding interest rates, investors this week will look for drama from the statement that accompanies the Tuesday rate announcement and from Mr. Greenspan's congressional testimony on Thursday.
Friday's labor report also will be an attention-grabber among the 20 economic reports due this week.
