Section: General News - Somchai Suwannaban, head of the BBC's Thai section, left for Bangkok on Wednesday to discuss the termination of the BBC's Thai service with local radio stations, The Nation reports.
During a meeting in London on Tuesday with BBC World Service management, Somchai was officially informed of the closure of the Thai service - along with broadcasts in Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Greek, Hungarian, Kazakh, Polish, Slovak and Slovene - by March.
BBC News reported that the move is a part of a ?30 million (Bt2.17 billion) restructuring of the World Service that involves the elimination of 10 foreign language services and the loss of 280 jobs. BBC World Service aims to launch an Arabic television news channel in 2007.
BBC staff said they do not know exactly when the Thai programme will be stopped. That will depend on talks this week between Somchai and the 67 radio stations in Thailand that transmit the Thai service, whose contents range from political and economic updates to human-interest stories.
