Section: General News - A military psychological operations unit was ambushed on Wednesday shortly after a session in Narathiwat with local residents, The Nation reports.

There was serious violence elsewhere also with the fatal shooting of a fisherman by two gunmen on motorbike, and a bomb that exploded in a policeman's car.

Investigating officials said Sgt Sompong Pongsao, 42, and three colleagues from the psych-op unit were travelling in a pick-up truck back to their unit at Cholthawas temple when at least four gunmen, hiding in a wooded area alongside the Dusongyoh-Lapae road, opened fire on them with M-16 and AK-47 assault rifles.

The attack was followed by an intensive gunfight before the militants fled. Sompong was severely injured, in the arm and chest, and sent to a local hospital. The pick-up was riddled with bullet holes.
