Section: General News - The Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Co-operatives will encourage rice farmers to store their own rice to help eliminate opportunities for corruption, the Bangkok Post reports.
President Teerapong Tungteerasunun said the bank wanted farmers who have their own storage facilities to store their own rice that had been pledged under government price stabilisation programmes.
Authorities hope that by eliminating middlemen in the process, endemic problems of corruption through the mixing of low- and high-grade rice can be cut down. Government stabilisation programmes offer farmers nationwide a set price for their rice harvest based on quality and grade.
Farmers, warehouse owners or rice traders can manipulate the system by pledging high quality-rice that is actually mixed with cheaper, lower-quality grains. Officials say the practice not only defrauds the government, but it also hurts the reputation of Thai rice in the world market, as buyers find that rice purchased is actually of a lower grade or even different strain than marketed.
