Cotton in China The old world cottons which originated in India reached the three Far Eastern countries (China, Korea and Japan). The winter in China was cold and only annual types of cotton were able to survive. According to George Watt, Chinese people planted cottons in gardens as an ornamental shrub until the end of the 7th century.
