BIRD FLU THREATENS POULTRY INDUSTRY OF PHILIPPINES' CANDABA

CANDABA - The P250 million (US$4.5 million) poultry industry here and surrounding towns are being threatened with bird flu contamination by thousands of migratory birds which have started to swarm in the vast Candaba swamps for sanctuary.

Mayor Jerry Pelayo said that because of the bird flu scare, he has sought the help of the Department of Agriculture (DA) to construct a seven-kilometer cyclone wire fence around the Candaba swamp area which is frequented by migratory birds to prevent local chickens and ducks from straying in the area.

FILIPINO SOLON BACKS RESEARCH ON VANNAMEI WHITE SHRIMP

DAGUPAN CITY - House Speaker Jose de Venecia, Jr. took time out from discussing political issues during the weekend to personally endorse the research on vannamei white shrimps being undertaken by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) here.

De Venecia said the research being conducted by the BFAR's National Integrated Fisheries Technology Development Center (NIFTDC) on some 1,080 breeders of vannamei shrimp imported from the United States seeks to boost fish sufficiency throughout the country and provide jobs to the unemployed.
