BRISBANE, Nov 1 Asia Pulse - The federal government continued to warn of a bird flu pandemic Monday, as Australia's peak medical group called for calm and said hype and misrepresentation were fanning community fears.
Australian Medical Association (AMA) president Mukesh Haikerwal called for calm and urged delegates at an Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation forum on bird flu in Brisbane to hose down the panic.
But Foreign Minister Alexander Downer was on the opposite tack, warning Australians of drastic action if the worst eventuated.
He said Australia would consider closing its borders to people fleeing a bird flu outbreak.
The government could deny anyone entry to ensure the deadly virus did not enter Australia, he said, but only under the most extreme circumstances.
"If there was an outbreak in a country and they were able to contain it very quickly to isolate the area where the outbreak took place, then we wouldn't have to (deny entry to anyone)," Mr Downer told the Nine Network.
"But if, of course, it became an epidemic, we would want to stop it becoming a pandemic spreading across borders.
