CANBERRA, Nov 1 Asia Pulse - Australian Communications Minister Helen Coonan has pushed back plans to carry out a major overhaul of Australia's media ownership rules until next year.
Senator Coonan had planned to introduce legislation paving the way for the changes to cross and foreign media ownership rules to parliament late this year.
But she told a Senate committee Monday the legislation was now not expected to be unveiled until next year, along with the government's plans for digital TV.
"What I expect is that the framework (for media ownership rules) will be in place shortly," Senator Coonan said.
"That will enable a period of consultation and I hope to have the legislation come forward early next year."
Prime Minister John Howard has repeatedly said that changing media ownership rules was not a major priority for the government.
Senator Coonan outlined her broad plans for the changes in August, saying Australia's media moguls would be able to join forces and foreign players invade the local market.
