TAIPEI, Nov 1 Asia Pulse - Taiwan's Department of Health (DOH) submitted an application to the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) Monday for a "compulsory license" to allow Tamiflu, a Swiss-patented drug used to treat influenza, to be produced in Taiwan as part of efforts to battle a possible avian flu pandemic.
Health Minister Hou Sheng-mou said that it was hoped that the IPO under the Ministry of Economic Affairs would hand down its ruling about the compulsory license before the end of November, legitimizing the DOH to conditionally produce Tamiflu in Taiwan.
It is hoped that quantities of Tamiflu can be produced locally under a compulsory license to allow Taiwan to have enough Tamiflu doses for 3 million people, plus existing Tamiflu stocks, in the event of a bird flu outbreak, Hou said.
