Oct. 31--Florida Power & Light issued a more optimistic appraisal of its restoration efforts on Sunday, estimating that 95 percent of the utility's customers who lost power in Hurricane Wilma will have electricity by Nov. 8.
The new projection -- for all counties hit by Wilma -- moves up the company's anticipated recovery schedule by one week. It comes at a time when some 620,000 homes in Miami-Dade and Broward counties are still without power, and with thousands of South Floridians poised to return to work today.
The school schedule, however, is far from normal: Broward officials again postponed school, this time at least through Wednesday, because it's unlikely all schools will have electricity any sooner. Miami-Dade officials are still hoping to reopen school on Wednesday.
That means thousands of parents will have to patch together child care while many still struggle to find gasoline, clean water, hot meals, cold drinks -- or a clean...
