M&A action lifts U.S. stocks
NEW YORK (UPI) -- A cascade of billion-dollar mergers sent global equity markets surging Monday, with Wall Street posting big number on all exchanges.
The Dow Jones industrial average had jumped 64.27 or 0.62 percent to 10,467.04 in late-morning trading. The Nasdaq composite was up 26.96 or 1.29 percent to 2,116.84, and the Standard & Poor's 500 had risen 8.25 or 0.69 percent to 1,206.66.
The big mergers came outside the United States: Telefonica SA is paying $31.39 billion for Britain's O2; Canada's Barrick Gold will pay $9.2 billion for Placer Dome; and Switzerland's Novartis...
