The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) held a special meeting late last night to expel former deputy secretary-general and national policy adviser to President Chen Shui-bian although the former senior presidential aide already voluntarily withdrew his party membership one day earlier.

In a damage control action, DPP Secretary-General Su Tseng-chang announced the expulsion of Chen Che-nan and called for a thorough probe in the alleged scams involving him. Su did not answer reporters' questions after making the brief announcement.
