AS LEADERS, it is easy to insulate ourselves from the beauty of the organization, the elegant stories of patients' transformations, and the rhythm of the organization. Too often, we are focused on the latest budget crisis or personnel issue. In leadership roles, problems gravitate to us and spread like an amoeba that can consume our time and shut out the positive aspects of the organization. When this happens, we are robbed of the energy to make positive change for the organization. Experiencing the joy of the organization is like an energy bar for athletes--it keeps us going in good times and bad. Energy is all about balancing the joys of the organization with the difficult issues. It's a matter of focus. Leadership is solving problems, but it is also listening to the heart songs of the organization that bring tears of pride and joy to our eyes. Successful leaders know how to get their hearts warmed. They know how to create the energy and joy they need to lead.
