This is a true story, which happened to me about 5 years ago. I was paged to see a patient in the hospital for catheter insertion. I introduced myself to him and he frantically told me. "You're the third person trying to get this catheter in!" I learned a staff nurse and a resident had already tried and failed to insert a catheter into his distending bladder, and he was not looking forward to my poking around. Half kidding, I told him I was an expert and I could insert the catheter in "one shot." He took me up on my bet and sure enough I was able to insert his catheter in one try.
