Faced with intense conservative opposition and a lack of support among GOP senators, Harriet Miers withdrew her Supreme Court nomination on Thursday.
President Bush may have hoped to avoid a fight and appeal to women when he tapped Miers, but the mistake has shown how risky stealth nominees can be. It also may have put conservative white males back on the short list.
