I couldn't help but notice that a number of skiers were lost to avalanches in Utah the week of January 20, 2005. I think the ski resort industry should look into utilizing some technology that has been around for some time but is now being looked by Homeland Security agencies, that of Radio Frequency Identification or RFID as it is known.

RFID involves a very small and inexpensive "tag" that can be applied to virtually anything and is commonly used in the retail industry for addressing shoplifting. You yourself may have been subjected to what happens when a cash register operator forgets to cancel out the tag and you are stopped at the door by a security person because you have set off their alarm.

The web site, RFID Journal, lists a pretty good description of these devices: "Passive Tag: a tag without its own power source and transmitter. When radio waves from the reader (transmitter) reach the chip's antenna, the energy is converted by the antenna into electricity that can power up the microchip in the tag. The tag is able to send back information stored on the chip. Today. simple passive tags cost from 20 cents to several dollars, depending on the amount of memory on the tag, packaging ...
