Oct. 27--Hurricane Wilma could hand insurers their biggest losses in Florida since Andrew swept through the region in 1992 if the early estimates for total damage nearing $10 billion prove true.
Hurricane Charley, last year's most harmful storm, racked up nearly $8 billion in claims. The three hurricanes preceding Wilma this year -- Dennis, Katrina and Rita -- cost insurers in Florida $1.8 billion.
Already, several major insurers, including Allstate Floridian and Nationwide, were reducing the number of policies they write in this state. Last week, Allstate backed off the Gulf coast region, citing losses from Katrina and Rita...
