I recently read that Ty Cobb's lifetime hit total was adjusted by baseball researchersto 4,189 as opposed to the long-time original figure of 4,191.
It would therefore stand to reason that Pete Rose actually set the lifetime hit record when he collected his 4,190th hit, not number 4,192 off the late Eric Show.
Can you please tell me what pitcher served up the actual record-breaker to Rose, and what type of hit it was?
Lou Corradi
Brooklyn, N.Y.
Rose collected his 4,190th base hit on September 8, 1985 when he singled in the first inning off Cubs right-handed pitcher Reggie Patterson in a game at Wrigley Field.
On the web site for Stan Musial (stan-the-man.com), it states that he played for 22 seasons in the majors. But, it also states that he had 24 All-Star appearances.
