TOPOLCANY, West Slovakia, Oct 25 (CTK) - The Topolcany Town Hall has officially apologised to local Jewish inhabitants for an anti-Jewish pogrom in the town at the end of September 1945.
"We express deep regret of the tragic event which has no equivalent in our modern history in terms of its evil and inhuman character," says the statement of the Topolcany municipal officials.
The statement was presented to representatives of the Association of Jewish Communities at a commemorative meeting on Sunday, attended by over 50 former Jewish inhabitants from Topolcany.
One of them was a 90-year-old Ruzena Hornova who survived the pogrom. She said that some good-hearted people warned against it and she managed to hide.
Deputy Topolcany mayor Jan Emila said that it was hard to form this text. Some councillors expressed the opinion that they should first wait for a comment from the Institute of National Memory.
