For many of the big teams the Carling Cup is a distraction from the main pre-occupation of landing either the Premiership or FA Cup, but for many others the Carling Cup is their only way to fame and glory, and perhaps more importantly Europe.

In the former group include such clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United, while in the latter are sides West Brom, Wigan and Bolton.
