Hutchison Whampoa last week boldly declared its third-generation mobile phone unit in Britain, 3 UK, the "first truly mobile media company".

After spending heavily to beat its rivals to market with the launch of 3G services in Europe in 2003, some reticence in declaring another "first" might be expected from the Hutchison subsidiary in a world where the distinctions between the telecommunications and entertainment industries are rapidly disappearing.
