Oct. 25--Texas will soon get one of the first offshore wind energy facilities in the country.
The state announced Monday that Galveston Offshore Wind LLC, a unit of a Louisiana company called Wind Energy Systems Technologies, has leased an area seven miles off Galveston Island and plans to build 50 turbines.
Company officials expect the site to produce energy by 2010.
The facility will be designed to produce 150 megawatts of electricity, which is enough to supply 40,000 homes. That's just 0.15 percent of Texas' current demand. But the wind facility will be...
