School-to-work transition in New Zealand is underpinned by a '"pathways" framework that says to young people: no matter what your background and how successful or unsuccessful you were at school, there are ... pathways to a good career and future'. Drawing on the first interviews in a longitudinal study of 114 young people aged 17 and 18 who had left school the previous year, this study suggests that young people take a risk-management approach to the transition process, which balances 'just-in-time' dynamism with 'just-in-case' education.
