In Australia, there has been a push to move credential-based vocational education and training into the secondary school. Young people's perceptions of the skills and attributes that employers look for were ascertained using data from studies tracking a group of Australian youth between 1999 and 2003. Their views, which largely concurred with the views of employers, were that employers would look first for 'soft skills' e.g. character traits and positive work behaviour and attitudes, before they look for 'hard skills', such as job competence.
