The decision to implement spirits stamps created a fair amount of worry when it was announced, and hopes that the project would disappear from the government's agenda were wildly optimistic.
Retailers seemed a little more sanguine about the issue than producers. But, as was pointed out to me this week by the Scotch Whisky Association, it could be a mistake to be too relaxed.
Every bottle of spirits released into the UK trade after Oct 1 2006 will require a duty stamp a tasteful little logo or sticker that threatens to destroy the crafted beauty of so many back labels.
