Oct. 24--INVESTORS AWAIT BOOST FOR STOCKS: Two forces that were expected to give stocks a boost simply haven't.
Last week oil prices fell below $60 for the first time since July. They've been on a downward swing since topping $70 in trading Aug. 30 after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast.
Rising oil prices have been a drag on the stock market all year. But just as they've fallen since early September, so have stocks.
Likewise, recent earnings seasons have provided the main reason for stocks to shine. But as we enter the final peak week of reports, the Dow Jones industrial average is down nearly 300 points for the month.
If not oil and earnings, then what else can inspire the market?
