FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ She flew in like a Halloween witch, after haunting Florida for more than a week.
Then she attacked, much more viciously than expected.
Forecasters had said Hurricane Wilma might be sapped of energy after pounding Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula on Friday and Saturday. Plus, they said, a cold front might shear it.
But no such luck.
"The shear was there, but this was a large hurricane," said Max Mayfield, director of the National Hurricane Center in Miami-Dade County. "It seemed to create its own environment and the shear didn't make an impact."...
