If you believe their ads, some disposable razors are more high-tech than the average space shuffle. But have you ever wondered if pivoting heads, rubber grip handles, lubricating strips and those little plastic cleaning thingies that push hairs out from between the blades do any good? Or even whether women really need a special women's razor and men a men's razor?

The best way to find out was to put our Home Testers on the job, trying and rating a total of 23 different models of disposable razors.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD) RAZOR?

A close shave, manoeuvrability, easy gliding across the skin and a comfortable handle all helped a razor rate well overall.

* Generally speaking, the more blades the better. The top razor for both men and women was the triple-blade SCHICK Xtreme III, while all the single-blade razors rated below average. The main advantages of more than one blade seem to be better manoeuvrability and a closer shave. Women added that razors with more blades glided more easily over skin, needed fewer passes, caused fewer nicks and needed less cleaning.
