SARASOTA COUNTY -- It's unlikely Joseph P. Smith will be tried here on charges he abducted, raped and murdered 11-year-old Carlie Brucia, local attorneys say.

They say media coverage, a car-wash surveillance video showing the abduction that has run repeatedly on television, and anger over the little girl's slaying make it improbable that an impartial jury will be found in Sarasota County.

Court officials expect about 500 potential jurors to show up this week -- 100 a day -- to answer two major questions: whether they can serve for six weeks, and whether media reports have already colored their opinions.
