It's midspring in Southern Nevada, and the water police are out on the streets in search of curbside puddles, wayward trickles and other telltale signs of water waste.
Starting Saturday, they will have something else to look for.
That's when summer watering restrictions take effect in the Las Vegas Valley and Boulder City. From May 1 through Sept. 30, watering is permitted any day of the week, but the use of sprinklers is prohibited between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
The restrictions apply to any irrigation device that sprays water into the air, where it is more easily lost to summertime wind and heat.
Doug Bennett, conservation manager for the Southern Nevada Water Authority, said the best time to water plants is between midnight and sunrise, generally the coolest and least windy part of the day.
For maximum efficiency, he suggests breaking up sprinkler sessions into several short applications separated by at least an hour. For...
