Microsoft is going cross platform with a technology called Windows Presentation Foundation/Everywhere that will, in theory, allow applets to run on any device.

It will be implemented as a browser plug-in and will be driven by platform-independent Javascript rather than Microsoft's .Net. But many questions remain...
