With a total of one dissenting vote, Congress last week passed legislation designed to combat bioterrorism and address other national health needs. The House passed the measure 425-1 May 22, and the Senate followed suit 98-0 May 23.
Soon after the Senate action, President George W. Bush said he intended to sign the bill. "This legislation strengthens food safety and security, improves the ability of federal, state, and local authorities to coordinate their response against possible bioterrorist attacks, and enhances surveillance and security over dangerous biological agents," Bush declared.
