My favorite season is about to begin. I relish the thought of supermarkets brimming with fall fruits and vegetables. Dozens of hard squashes, loads of apples and pears await. Sweet maple syrup, wildflower honey and citrus will soon find their way onto my dinner table.

And Halloween is here too. However, that brings thoughts of my kids being grown up. I really miss the door-to-door walks, excitement over unlimited candy for a night and spending time with my kids who are now young adults.

I don't miss spending money on costumes, which are still sitting in the hall closet. I'll spend money on food for an autumnal bash instead. I bet if I invite my daughter home from school for a weekend of feasting, she'll come. She inherited the food gene from me.

My favorite hard squash varieties are calabaza and butternut. Calabaza squash is often called West Indian pumpkin, green pumpkin squash or calabash.
