Oct. 22--The stock market struggled again Friday -- no sugar coating that.

The day brought a bad end to a bad week, and so far October has lived up to its ignominious reputation. But amid the market carnage, perhaps a dollop of hope is emerging.

"You are starting to see the rumblings of some new market leaders," said Barry Ritholtz, market strategist at Maxim Group, a New York money management firm. "And if we don't get some new leaders soon, then my forecast is that 2006 is going to be a mess."

Amateur investors may not pay much attention to such things as market leadership, but the pros do. In every bull market, a few sectors outshine all the others, and those stars exert a powerful psychological pull...
