Oct. 21--AUSTIN -- Rep. Tom DeLay appeared in court as a criminal defendant for the first time Friday, but the proceedings were put on hold pending the congressman's request for a new judge.
Defense lawyer Dick DeGuerin wants state District Judge Bob Perkins to recuse himself because the judge has contributed to Democrats and some of their liberal allies.
Mr. DeGuerin also filed motions seeking to have the trial moved from Travis County, a Democratic stronghold.
