FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ Last month, the Panthers played golf about 10,000 feet above sea level in Vail, Colo. That was the first of four days of "team building" there.

This past week, Philadelphia and Tampa Bay went on short excursions for the purpose of bonding.

In the Flyers' case, it seemed more like boot camp, thanks to coach Ken Hitchcock. He took the team for three days to West Point, N.Y., home of the United States Military Academy.

When players got to the rink Wednesday, they were surprised they wouldn't be skating. Hitchcock canceled practice and the Flyers went to USMA's training facility, where they did military-style drills on the football field and ate lunch with cadets in the mess hall.

The Lightning did its team building in a considerably different locale _ Atlantic City.

"The players picked it," Lightning coach John Tortorella said. "We always look for a time in the schedule to just get out on the road together. No wives, no girlfriends, no kids.
