Throughout their record-setting run, the Atlanta Braves have survived plenty of mound defections.
Greg Maddux isn't there anymore. Neither are Tom Glavine, Kevin Millwood, Jaret Wright, Paul Byrd, Jason Marquis, Russ Ortiz or any of the dozens of Braves pitchers who have thrived under the tutelage of Leo Mazzone since 1990.
Now Mazzone himself has galloped to greener pastures, landing in Baltimore, where he will work with new Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo, his lifelong friend.
It is tempting to say that now we will find out for sure about Mazzone's methods. He won't be working in pitcher-friendly Turner Field anymore, but rather at homer-happy Camden Yards.
It is tempting as well to wonder whether Mazzone will soon regret taking that three-year deal in Baltimore for a reported $1.5 million. After all, the once-proud Orioles haven't had a 20-game winner since Mike Boddicker in 1984.
But considering the man's track record, a better question might be: Is this the beginning of the end for the amazing Braves?
