Oct. 21--This is why the month of October gives investors the willies.

A late-afternoon plunge in the stock market Thursday obliterated the fine rally of the previous day. Heavy selling in the last couple of hours of trading lopped off 133 points from the Dow Jones industrial average.

Energy stocks led the retreat as the price of crude oil dipped below $60 a barrel. Shares of Irving-based Exxon Mobil Corp., one of the big dogs in the Dow, dropped 3.5 percent.
